Ours is a reading tradition. We have not nearly lived accordingly yet as an Ummah, with most Muslims being “subliterate” when it comes to reading people, places, things, and ideas correctly. This has made us overly dependent on religious and secular scholars and has led most Muslims into genetic death and enslavement (not yet fully visible, but inevitable and soon). To control one’s vision is to control one’s mind is to control one’s practice and therefore one’s path. This is enslavement. This is devastation. May the remnant of the ummah now awaken and arise.
Even so, things can yet change. Reading means so much more than books. We Muslims should have the best readers and interpreters of every aspect of reality, true “life scientists” as science is knowledge and knowledge is ilm. We should be knowledgeable in all sciences and arts, and the Muslims should be known not only for our voracious appetite for seeking and synthesizing knowledge through practical prophetic problem solving, but also for our ethics and purification techniques. May it be so.
